Artificial lawn can change the way you use a small courtyard, a family garden or a patch that is difficult to maintain. Before choosing a colour or pile, take a closer look at the space and what you expect from it.

Plan around everyday use

Will this be a place for children to play, a route through the garden or a tidy outlook from the kitchen? Tell your installer about pets, furniture and regular foot traffic. Different uses can call for different product and installation choices.

Compare samples in daylight and feel them underfoot. A small sample is useful for colour and texture, but ask to see larger examples so you can judge the overall appearance.

Ask what happens underneath

The preparation beneath the lawn matters. Ask how the existing surface will be removed, how the base will be prepared and where water will go.

Point out areas that already puddle after rain. Artificial lawn does not, by itself, solve an underlying drainage issue. The quote should make clear what preparation and drainage work is included.

Consider sun, shade and the edges

Artificial surfaces can become hot in direct sun. Think about shade and how the area will be used on hot days, especially by children and pets. Ask about the specific product and suitable ways to manage its surface temperature.

Check the finish where the lawn meets paving, garden beds and steps. Edges and joins deserve the same attention as the centre of the lawn, both for appearance and everyday access.

Understand the care routine

Lower maintenance still involves some care. Leaves, spills and pet use all need attention. Ask for cleaning and brushing instructions for your chosen product, including which products or tools to avoid.

Keep a copy of the product name, warranty and care guidance. When you compare quotes, consider the preparation, installation and ongoing care together with the lawn itself.
